The trams were not running that day; they headed back from the Smolny on foot. A biting wind cut through the streets; Kitty could smell snow. They were almost back to their hotel, on Nevsky Prospect, when they heard the tramping of boots.

“Look,” Lincoln said.

Mass upon mass, the Bolsheviks were heading out of the city to face Kerensky’s Cossacks, thousands of them. At the front were the Red Guards with cannons and motor trucks full of soldiers; behind them the latest recruits, straight from the factories by the look of them, none of them marching in step, and not just men and boys, but women, even children in worn-out boots and thin, ragged coats. Some of them were only armed with spades.

They carried a red flag with coarse gold lettering: “Peace! Land!”

There was a Junker standing behind them. “Look at them!” he said to Lincoln. “They will run like sheep when they have to face real soldiers. Do you think a single one of them can fight?”
